It’s holiday season and Christmas is just around the corner. If you’ve neglected to plan your year-end staycation or are straight up bored of the same old destinations, this piece is for you. I’ve compiled a list of wonderfully obscure locations that’ll cost you less and make you forget you’re still in the country!
Kuala Selangor: Sasaran
The photo above is a typical shot that everyone takes when they’re there. It’s blasted all over social media. This beach is quite like the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Yeah, gives you that feeling like Jason Momoa is gonna burst out of the water looking all hunky, huh? FYI, that was an Aquaman movie reference. You had better make a trip there before this secret hideout picks up commercially.
Terengganu: Gem Island
Also known as Pulau Gemia and is a privately owned island off the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It possesses all the traits of a dream island – exotic, sandy white beach, clear transparent water, and vibrant coral reefs. I’d liken this place to Lombok Indonesia; just as beautiful as Bali but not as touristy. Plus, they only have one resort there so there’s no need to trouble yourself with comparing resorts and all that.
Terengganu: Lake Kenyir
Don’t you just love the sound of a “floating chalet”? I live in the capital city, so I’m a sucker for this. You can hang around fishermen boathouses and even join them for fishing trips. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s an angler’s paradise, but it comes pretty close given the scenic view especially at sunrise.
Perak: Teluk Senangin
Now, this is a beach more popularly known to locals, not city-dwellers like us. It’s a great spot for family outings as you can lounge by the beach and gaze into the seemingly endless horizon at sunset. The Turtle Conservation and Information Center nearby is great for anyone who is passionate about wildlife preservation or loves… you guessed it, turtles. The seafood there is amazingly fresh, so if that’s your craze, you will thoroughly enjoy this place.
We have beaches that are just as beautiful as our Southeast Asian neighbours. Make sure to share this article with your friends so they too can explore the hidden gems this country has to offer. Malaysia Boleh!
